one of the greatest videos of all time
Nov 7, 20256 Bill Wurtz’s history of the entire world, i guess is one of those rare YouTube videos that feels like it could only have come from YouTube. Released on May 10, 2017 as a follow-up of sorts to his viral history of japan, the 19-minute video took Wurtz more than 11 months to make, including nearly three months of research. It was an immediate phenomenon, pulling 3.2 million views in its first day, reaching #1 on YouTube’s trending page, and later becoming one of YouTube’s top ten trending videos of 2017. The ridiculous premise is right there in the title: explain essentially everything that has ever happened. Wurtz begins with the formation of the universe, Earth and life, then barrels through evolution, early civilization, empires, major religions, exploration, colonization, revolutions, industrialization, the world wars, communism and capitalism, modern technology and climate change. Somehow, it gives you a recognizable outline of billions of years of history without ever feeling like you're sitting through a lecture. All while creating endless memes and being hilariously rewatchable.
